The David Jones Challenge
In June 2005 David Jones Limited required the relocation of its Queen St Mall store in Brisbane into a multi storey building next door , which was stage 1 of a new expanded new store in the Queens Plaza shopping centre. This project was extremely large given all 5 floors covering 12,500 cubic metres of stock, fixtures, office and computer equipment (this is the equivalent to 250 households) were to be relocated over a 64-hour period.
The Farragher Solution
Farragher was selected after an exhaustive search process by David Jones due to our previous experience in major department store logistic management. Due to the sheer size and tight time frame, the project presented a number of unique challenges.
The solution involved;
- Organising in excess of 80 staff and 8 team leaders into continuous 8 x 8 hour shifts.
- Designing Site safety standards and procedures and inducting over one hundred workers.
- Assessing and procuring substantial specialised material handling equipment to site .
- Briefing , coordinating and communicating the scope of work , roles and responsibilities the Farragher , David Jones and several Shopfit and Trades contract teams.
- First Stage involved packing the entire stores stock, everything from Bohemian Crystal to Plasma TV’s to designer clothes , which had to be either cartonised or palletised.
- Second Stage involved the Shopfitters dismantling and re-assembling shopfittings before redelivery could occur
- Third Stage was the uplift and redelivery , unpack and set up of all stock on all floors .
The Result
Farraghers completed the time sensitive project with 1 full shift to spare helping David Jones to be “business ready” earlier than the anticipated time frame. Farraghers ability to plan, resource and work in conjunction with the David Jones team and other contractors ensured the success of this relocation. This was the biggest relocation of equipment David Jones had initiated , the results were way ahead of David Jones expectations.
Melbourne International Airport Fitout
The Challenge
Brisbane depot has recently been given the task to provide the Interstate transport for the Melbourne International Airport fit-out. The challenge was to safely and efficiently handle and load the purpose built, highly polished joinery in Brisbane and deliver to the Melbourne airport site at 2am each morning.
The Farragher Solution
The key to success behind this project was to work closely with our client in Brisbane. The solution involved;
- Reviewing the drawings/plans of the equipment to establish the finer details of loading.
- Conducted onsite visits in Brisbane to inspect the goods and discuss loading schedules with the manufacturer.
- In order to ensure deliveries were carried out on time and without difficulty we conducted inspections of Melbourne airport to assess access and security.
- The deliveries were then staggered into 5 stages of approximately 150-200m3 with each delivery having to be conducted within 3 days.
The Result
We are thrilled to report that the first 2 stages have gone like clock work with all items being delivered on time and in perfect condition. The final stages will be happening shortly. This has been a very interesting project to be involved in and lots of planning and preparation has happened behind the scenes to ensure a seamless transport service for our customer.
